The Difference between Mr. T and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem

Let me preface by saying I've never met either Mr. T or Mr. Murphy, and that I am a fan of both.

The reason I've never met Mr. T is because i've never been in the same building as him. From everyone I've met who HAS met him (which is a surprisingly high number considering), says he is absolutely the nicest man alive. Just hearing him expound the wonders of Hanes Beefy Tees and underwear on Howard Stern fairly convinced me the same. Has there ever been a man more appreciative of his celebrity status? My friend the other night told me that he met Mr. T at Canter's in LA, and he was telling the kids at the next table that Mr. T says EAT YOUR VEGETABLES and stuck around to sign everyone's napkin in the whole restaurant.

The reason I have never met Mr. LCD Soundsystem is because when we opened for them at Mezzanine last month, we were informed by the house manager that we were not to speak to Mr. Murphy. God forbid someone tells him , "hey man, i really love that song- Daft Punk is playing at my House, My House" . Sure, i know its annoying to have opening bands trying to get on your tours, or drink your Chopin vodka, or make passes at your keyboard player, but COME ON! Is he really that fragile? At least have the balls to be an asshole to someone in person, not via the club's management.

I just hope that Mr. Murphy meets Mr. T someday and learns something about being a public figure, that its ok to be nice to the commonfolk. After all, everyone benefits from eating vegetables, wearing clean underwear and listening to good dance music.

LOVEMAKERS interview LOVEMAKERS

Q: How and when did the Lovemakers form?
A: In the summer of 2002, Scott was working at a record store called Saturn Records in Rockridge, a neighborhood in north Oakland where all three of the original members of the Lovemakers lived. Lisa was dating his manager at the time until Scott, using a rock band as a classic ploy, promptly stole her.
Soon she was playing violin in his rock band, Applesaucer, while working at a marine biology lab and also playing violin for a traveling bay area circus during the summers. This was not to last long, however, and within a year Scott and Lisa formed their own band, The Lovemakers. With the addition of Jason Proctor on keyboards, they began playing shows and recording as a three-piece; electronic drums, Jason on keys, Scott on guitar and vocals, Lisa on bass, vocal, and violin.

Q: How did you get signed to Interscope?
A: We self-released our first homemade record and sold it to record stores and at warehouse and club shows. Right away, our live shows were very successful in the bay area, and the local record stores sold out of our records every month. Live 105, the Bay Area alternative rock station even played “Dance” on the radio. Within a few months of this, we had major labels coming to shows, and got lured into a demo production deal with Jeff Saltzman and Braden Merrick (future Killers producer and manager). Through this connection, but mostly via a friend of a friend at Interscope, and after numerous grueling trips to “showcase” in LA, we finally signed to Interscope.

Q: Describe the recording process for “Times of Romance”
A: Weeks before moving to LA to record with Brian Lapin and Terence Yoshiaki (the Transcenders production team), and Cliff Norell, Scott and Lisa broke up their 3 year relationship. It couldn’t have been a more stressful and taxing situation. A new, confusing, friendless city, constant fighting and emotional warfare, a brand new record deal and a step into the abyssal world
of the music INDUSTRY. Teetering between extreme hopefulness and confidence that we were to become the stars of 2003, and depression and anxiety due to the living situation, we finished the record in 4 months. Not a day too soon. It’s a miracle we survived even making the record without someone dying or severely injured.

Q:Describe the songwriting process
A: Scott and Lisa write the songs together, and separately. We use computers and real instruments. Scott writes the rock songs and the majority of the basic music structures. Lisa writes more electronic based songs and the majority of the melody and lyrics.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: (Scott) Fall out Boy
(Lisa) music my friends make, classical music, life, ex-boyfriends, fiction, booty bass and modern r&b, fantasy.

Q: What does Oakland sound like? Does being from Oakland influence you in any way?
A: Sure. Oakland these days sounds so very hyphie. I (Lisa) even named my cat ‘keak’ after keak da sneak, one of E40’s disciples. When we started, there was much more glitchy post-rave broken sounding music happening. Dancing started to be cool again, at least to us, and we made it a priority to make that happen. There are so many warehouses in Oakland in which to have really fun parties. And though we never felt really enveloped into any one scene, it seemed as though there was a general movement towards lo fi, raunchy, audience-participating dance music. And now, much to our surprise, we stumble upon bands that we have unwittingly influenced ourselves, which is a trippy realization.

Q: If you could sum up your whole artistic vision in one word or phrase, what would that be?
A: (Scott) Drumstick, or harem.
(Lisa) Fear, or fearless

Q: Are the songs about each other?
A: Maybe, probably not

Q: Was/Is it hard being in a band together after the breakup?
A: Yes, then no. We know each other too well to love each other, and love each other too much to like each other. Like marriage without the routine sex.

Q: Why did you decide to cover “Shake that Ass”, and did 50 cent come to the studio to do his part?
A: Its not a cover. We wrote the song and stole 50 cents lyrics for an
illegal mashup vinyl. But Curtis is definitely a pal.

Q: I hear your live show has been described as a psychedelic sex-frenzy where Lisa gets totally naked and tries to have sex with Scott and also the audience. Is this legal?
A: No, I don’t believe its legal, but we haven’t been sued yet.

Q: For Lisa- How does being a woman in the music industry change your experience?
A: I wish I could ignore it completely, because the best way to hate
something is to pretend it doesn’t exist. However, it is consistently
annoying that no one ever believes that girls can produce or write music. Always the assumption stands that whoever man is standing closest to the girl did all the real work. I can often tell, or suspect when girls write music though. Girls write weirder music I think, when given the chance. I like “girl” bass-lines and melodies- they are often pretty progressive (aka bjork, kelis, missy, peaches)

Q: When did you get a drummer and how has this changed your sound and shows?
A: We got a drummer after we recorded Times of Romance, since the record had more of a rock and roll feel than our earlier dance warehouse club vibe. We found our first drummer, Josh Kilbourn, in Concord and he was with us until he quit and was replaced by Ken Hard, formerly of Oasis. Having live drums is a sonic luxury that’s impossible to recreate with exclusively electronic beats. Not that club music isn’t great, its just different. We like the flexibility of being able to do a completely free/improvisational rock freakout and follow it with a dance floor smasher.

Q: I hear you also have a new keyboard player?
A: Yes, Brandon Arnovick. Quite a character. He is an exquisite liar and an all around gem. We actually believed that he was a former cook in the army for over 2 months. He sells real estate, makes pepsi commercials, and smokes entire joints simultaneously on tour.

Q: You have a new record coming out on Fuzz. What is different about this label?
A: For one, it is based in San Francisco and has a “startup” sort of feel to it. More socialist than capitalist; more loft than megaplex. They are both a music label and a website that caters to musicians, and sells music at a very artist friendly rate. Our contract was 1 page long, and in English! Together we are forging the path of the new music industry along with Nettwerk, and a variety of production houses springing up like so many flowers on the grave of Hollywood. We have had a great experience so far and plan to release the record in the spring. Its nice to feel respected as both artist and business partner. It is still working out the growing pains, but I think it will soon bloom into something quite wonderful for bands that know what they want.

Q: Any surprises on the new record [Misery Loves Company sic]?
A: It has a video for each song, which was a lot of fun for us. We are
expanding as artists not just musically, but now much more into the visual arts well. Musically, we have some honest to god epic rock songs on this EP, which is something we only flirted with before. We also have a piano ballad- ha! But it’s hard not to make club songs- they are just too fun. We recorded to tape in Jason Carmer’s Berkeley home studio. We played everything straight, shied away from overproduction and got some really great sounds from very very little gear. Jason didn’t even have any microphones when we got there, as he has just recently come back from “quitting because music sucks now” and had sold most of his gear. We borrowed mics and a drum machine and Michael Urbano from Fuzz to play drums on most of the songs. Scott and I had recorded these songs so many times already, and kept some of the elements we had already recorded, so it was pretty easy to get in there and just get it done. Jason has such great style and personality; we were really pleased with the match.

Q: What can we expect this year from The Lovemakers?
A: Touring, another EP, a clothing line, and a movie. That’s not a joke either.

Q: Why did you make a preset list of interview questions? Don’t you like doing interviews?
A: Answering the same questions over and over is boring for everyone. We tried to really thoroughly answer all the basic questions here, so as to make room for more interesting conversations. Really we are doing them and us a favor by not ever meeting face to face. They don’t have to be bored and we don’t have to laugh at them for not knowing that we really wrote “Dance” and “Shake That Ass”. It really seems like the best thing for both parties, don’t you agree?

Hello nation.

We are nearing completion of a 5 song/5 video album entitled Misery Loves Company that will be coming out in the spring on Fuzz. Our plan is to release a 5 song 5 video album every 6 months or so. Scott and I wrote and recorded these songs over the past year and even ended up using one of these "demo" on the album. Jason Carmer produced the rest of the songs with invaluable help from Fuzz's own percussive maestro Michael Urbano. We teamed up with Victor Solomon again (Shake that Ass) to shoot 4 of the 5 videos; the fifth video will be entirely animated. We feel a personal artistic multi-media accomplishment unrivaled, and couldn't be more pleased with our new label family which made it happen. I feel like Warhol in the Factory and can't wait to share it with the universe.
